Alan Auld Engineers at Birkshead Mine

A number of Alan Auld Engineers recently enjoyed a visit to British Gypsum’s Birkshead mine in Cumbria (1st December) as part of a group of twelve Midland Institute of Mining Engineers (MIME) Younger Members.

The visit comprised of a talk from Senior Mining Engineer Jim Davies which provided an overview of the site, followed by a detailed tour of the mine with Jim Davies and Mine Manager Peter Firby, which included thorough, hands-on demonstrations of the drill rig and a hydraulic scaling hammer as well as a visit to the working face and crusher station.  The tour concluded with a visit to the mine’s underground workshop for a demonstration of the capabilities of the site’s mechanical and electrical support team.

Every member of the visiting party wishes to thank British Gypsum for providing the opportunity to see an underground mine in action and MIME for making this visit possible.
